The F102 Delta Dagger was able to break the sound barrier thanks to the discovery of the “Area Rule” by NASA engineer Richard Whitcomb. By redesigning the aircraft, the engineers were able to reduce wave drag and thus reduced the size of the shockwaves produced at transonic speeds.
